Never thought I would say this...

I never thought I would ask this...but am I eating enough??

Let me just start by saying if you tell me something, even if I know it's wrong, I will still remember what you said. So, at my last visit to surgeon's office the NUT told me I should only be eating 500-600 calories a day. Now, I instantly thought this NUT is a nut and I texted AJ and said "does this sound right to you???" Of course she said no, that was crazy. In my sane mind I know that is crazy, but in my cray cray mind I still hear her saying that. I do track everything I eat and I will tell you that very rarely are my calories that low...they usually fall some where around 900-1000. I know a lot of you will still think even that's too low, but keep in my mind that my hypertension specialist still will not release me to do any exercising except walking (and it can't be at a pace that gets my heart rate up).

I have an appointment in two weeks for my 2nd fill (although I'm not sure I need the fill) and I will clarify things with the doctor. On the same day (later in the afternoon) I also have an appointment with my Hypertension Specialist...hopefully he will release me to exercise.

On to other things...did you hear that Paula Deen has Type 2 Diabetes??? I saw it on the news. Apparently she has known for 3 years. Health activists are calling her a hypocrite because she will now be promoting a diabetes medication, as well as her famously delicious (but not so healthy) recipes. I still love Paula, I don't care what they say.

In unrelated news, I had a fabulous, big butt pajama weekend. It was a 4 day weekend since we had a snow day on Friday. Work is still....work. They put a new kid (new to me, not new to the school) in my room today. He is well known for throwing things when he gets pissed off...staplers, chairs, books...whatever is close to him. Great. I personally think he should be in the male teachers classroom. Whatever, I will do the best I can do. I am just biding my time there and I learned a long time ago to watch whose hand you bite today, it may be attached to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow...therefore, I just do as I am told and pray for snow days :)

When I first got banded I ate around 1000 calories. I was not exercising at all. After I lost 50 lbs. and started exercising I had to increase that to 1200 calories a day. That is what I am for 1200-1300 calories a day (and about 1500 on my lax day). Do what is right for your body. Everyone is different and has to eat different calorie amounts.

I try and stay at or around 1000 calories (I slip somedays... but you know.) I think especially if you are on a restricted exercise regimen, 1000 should be good. I've never thought staying any lower for any extended amount of time would be healthy.
Just my opinion... I'm an educator like yourself (Life skills special ed:) So no one ever calls me doctor. (Though one student calls me "boss lady" and I think that is even better:)

I think the 500-600 calorie range was recommended only for the first few days after surgery for me, and that was because it was all clear liquids. Since then it has always been to aim for 1200! You just need to find what works for you.

My surgeon wants me under 800, so 900-1000 sounds fine to me. Each dr seems to be a bit different though!

Others may disagree, but I see the info given to us by the NUT as a "guideline". Everyone's body reacts differently to this journey and I think that the biggest thing is to figure out what works best for you. I can tell you that I don't lose anything at less than 1,000 calories a day (I figured this out when I hit a 3 week stall a month out of surgery). Over the past 13 months, whenever I hit a long stall I have bumped my calories up a bit and just this week I am trying 1,200-1,300 to see if that works.

My advice to you is to play around with it and you'll find the level that works best for you...

I stopped reading at "500-600" calories...went back to make sure I saw right. REALLY? The lowest I was ever told is bet. 800-1000. One nutritionist did say "Aim for about 800" while you're losing and then add in an extra 200-300 calories for maintenance.

It seems low to me but then again, I have a hard time coming in under 1200/day. I'm not the model bandster. lol.

My surgeon and nutritionist advised that if you incorporate exercise into being banded that you should eat more! That is different for each of us.

I eat between 1400 and 1500 a day and I am losing, when I was eating 900 - 1100 calories I maintained for months, so my body needs more to lose. I know it makes no sense you would think the lower you go the more you lost, but actually your body thinks it is starving and worries about where it's next fuel is coming from so it tend to holds on to what it has.

When you feed it, then it lets go of fat.

I am like Vicky in that I change it up though I will eat 1400 one week and then 1200 or 1300 the next and so forth, I never let my body get used to a number.

Each of us is different, I worked really hard in the beginning to find out what my body did and would react to by experimenting. I learned so much by trial and error.

everyone is different, of course. but i do the best staying around 700-800 cals a day. and i do NOT eat back my exercise calories. if i go much above that, my loss lessens pretty significantly.

now of course once you get to maitenance, it's a whole new story!

500 or 600 calories a day!?!?! That is WAY too low. I can't imagine any health care professional responsibly making a recommendation like that. You should tell your surgeon because I cannot imagine that he/she believes that is all you should eat.

When I was losing, I ate anywhere from 1,200 - 1,500 calories per day. Now that I am in maintenance, I average 1,500 - 1,800. I exercise moderately every day. I lost 100 lbs. in 10 months and 115 lbs overall.

I don't know how much anyone should eat... least of all me! I'm sorry you're going through this with the new kid. :(
