School food yumminess ...is that an oxymoron???

Today was my first day back at work. All faculty and staff of all the schools on post met at one school for like a welcome back and meet and greet type deal. So the General or Commander something or another (ok, it was somebody real important...I just don't remember his title/rank) got up there and talked about how he was focused on getting kids healthy and this was going to include more exercise and healthier options in the cafeteria.

I think this is awesome. Did you know that when I first started teaching I gained 25 pounds in the first year?? You know why??? Because I ate school food every day. At the time some of the things that were offered every day was : pizza, hamburgers, french fries, cake, cookies, and chocolate milk (and it wasn't the lowfat kind).

So after all the bigwigs talked they had a spread set up for us. It was all the different food that they will serve this year for breakfast in the schools. I normally don't usually like school food, but I have to say I was pretty impressed. They had these awesome fruit kabobs, turkey bacon and sausage (that tasted great!), some kind of whole wheat biscuits (I didn't try those so I don't know if they were good), cheese omelets, and waffles with fresh fruit on top. I don't like waffles/pancakes/french toast so I didn't try that. They also had some greek yogurt with this awesome crunchy cinnamon stuff on top. I don't know what that cinnamon stuff was, but it was oh so yummy. They gave us cards to score each food we tried. I was honestly impressed with all of it. I hope my school offers that greek yogurt all the time...if so, I will be eating breakfast at school.

My room is no where close to being finished. By the time I left today I was sweatin' like a whore a church. I had moved furniture, piled up 4 big trash cans, and completely cleaned out my desk. Whew...I haven't even made a dent in that mess. Back at it tomorrow. How long till fall break???

that's fantastic, the district where I work is doing the same thing. It's important especially for those kids who really only get fed at school because their parents can't afford to feed the at home.

YUM! That sounds delish!! Smart way to get the staff to come in early and work longer! He should have a healthy cocktail hour too.... keep you working late... ;-) Maybe you can suggest it to the General-Commander-Seargant-Bossypantsman ;-D

Room prep sounds like quite the workout!

Aug 7th is my first day back! Not as a teacher this time, but as an assistant. Now I'll get my full lunch, damnit! :)

We had a MASSIVE push on healthier school meals about 8 years ago. It has completely changed the way food is prepared with more of it being cooked from scratch. Some of it actually even tastes good now. Sadly it doesn't stop the children coming with chocolate spread sandwiches, half a ton of mini sausages or eating their crisps, chocolates and sweets before anything else.

It sounds like they're making a real effort to help keep kids healthy. My daughters' school has a "free offering bar" that's basically like a salad bar. My oldest loves it and I cant' complain about her supplementing her lunch with cherry tomatoes and cucumbers!

I love that they're offering healthier stuff to the kids! I hope they do that at my boys' school... on days I don't feel like making lunches. LOL

That greek yogurt sounds amazing. I love cinnamon. :)
